Debunking the myths: the truth about men’s health

Myth: Walking without a hat will lead to baldness

It’s not the cold, but genetics that is the key factor in baldness, so you don’t have to worry about walking without a hat damaging your hair. Research indicates that both men and women lose less hair in winter than in summer. The myth about the connection between cold and baldness may have arisen from this observation.

In fact, wearing a hat that is too tight can speed up hair loss. For example, Korean nurses wearing tight hospital caps experienced accelerated hair loss in the crown and back of the head. It is likely that the pressure from the compressed elastic band could have cut off the blood supply to the hair follicles, causing them to be lost.

If you don’t like hats, don’t worry: they don’t protect against baldness. However, if you prefer to keep warm, choose looser hats that won’t put pressure on your scalp.

Myth: A laptop on your lap can cause infertility

It is believed that heat and electromagnetic radiation from a laptop can negatively affect the male reproductive system.

To produce healthy sperm, the temperature of the testicles must be 2-8 °C below body temperature, otherwise the vessels do not have time to provide blood supply to the testicles. This can make sperm less motile or lead to mutations in the genetic material.

A laptop on your lap increases testicular temperature by just 0.6°C. Regarding electromagnetic fields, laptops are designed to minimize their impact on health. However, a safer option would be to use your laptop on a desk to avoid overheating and possible back and eye problems.

Myth: Circumcision is only beneficial

While circumcision may have some benefits, there are also dark sides to the procedure.

Benefits of circumcision:

  • Protection against phimosis and related problems. However, penile cancer is a rare disease that affects only 1-8 men out of a million.
  • Reducing the risk of genitourinary tract infections and STIs. However, the use of condoms remains a more effective method.

Disadvantages of circumcision:

  • Complications after surgery, especially in adults. There may be bleeding and inflammation in the circumcision area.
  • Possible problems with sexual sensations, although the effect on sexual satisfaction may be minor.

Each person must decide for himself whether to resort to circumcision, taking into account all its pros and cons. Therefore, it is important to consult your doctor before making a final decision.

Myth: There is no age limit for men to conceive

If women have a biological clock, men don’t?

A healthy man’s testicles continue to produce sperm into old age. However, this does not mean that problems with conception in older men are excluded.

After 40 years, androgen levels decrease, which can lead to decreased sexual desire. Problems with conceiving in older men can be more technical.

Even if you manage to conceive a child in old age, there is no guarantee that he will be born healthy. After age 40, the risk of genetic abnormalities in sperm increases, which can lead to birth defects, cancer and other diseases.

Every man decides for himself when to become a father. However, it should be remembered that the optimal age for fatherhood is when the probability of having a healthy child is highest – up to 40 years.

Myth: Sexual abstinence is harmful to health

The need for sex is a natural phenomenon, but refusing it does not lead to serious consequences for the body. People who avoid sex have almost the same risks of developing mental disorders and suicide attempts as those who are sexually active.

However, long-term or permanent abstinence can also have its risks. Those who have regular sex are less likely to develop prostatitis and are more likely to avoid mood disorders, obesity and addictions.

If abstinence does not cause problems, there is nothing wrong with its practice. Sex “for the sake of health” without a corresponding desire and a reliable partner is not necessary.
