Myth: Lack of sex is bad for your health

Lack of sex by itself does not lead to noticeable health problems. However, regular sexual activity can provide certain benefits, such as strengthening the immune system, stabilizing blood pressure, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and relieving stress.

Of course, it is important to remember that each person is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Some people prefer a more active sexual lifestyle, while others prefer less frequent sexual intercourse. The main thing is that it meets the individual needs and desires of each person.

Myth: Men think about sex every 7 seconds

Many people believe that the typical man thinks about sex constantly. For example, it is a common belief that such thoughts visit a representative of the stronger sex every seven seconds. However, recent research published in the Journal of Sex Research has debunked this myth.

In a study conducted at The Ohio State University, 238 students kept track of their thoughts about sex, food and sleep for a week. The results showed that men think about sex much less often – an average of 19 times a day, instead of the estimated 8 thousand times as previously stated.

Study participants also reported thoughts about food (an average of 18 times) and sleep (an average of 11 times). For women, on average they thought about sex 10 times a day, food 15 times and sleep 8.5 times.

This study challenges stereotypes that men are hypersexual and women are uninterested in sex. In addition, it shows that the differences between men and women in this aspect are much smaller than previously thought.

Myth: Masturbation is bad for your health

Previously it was believed that masturbation in all its forms was wrong. Then the opinion changed, and it began to be considered normal for teenagers, but for adults it was seen as a “replacement for sex”.

Today, masturbation is considered a normal practice at any age, even if a person prefers it to other forms of sexual activity.

However, masturbation can become a problem in two cases:

  • When the chosen method of stimulation cannot be reproduced in real sex. This can lead to difficulties in intimate life, and this phenomenon is called maladaptive masturbation.
  • When the duration of sexual stimulation is excessively long. For example, watching pornography or long online sessions can take several hours. These sensations and emotions are difficult to reproduce in real sex, which can negatively affect your sex life with your partner, causing a loss of motivation for sexual relations.
