Myth and truth about hair

Hair loss is a big problem for both women and men. Many believe that it is caused by stress, as well as frequent scratching. But the reality is a little more complicated, and influencing hair thickness is not that easy.

What determines hair thickness?

  1. Genetics. Hair density is partly determined by genetic factors. Each person has their own genetic code, which affects the number of hair follicles on the scalp and their ability to grow and become dense.
  2. Age. As many people age, there is a natural decrease in hair density due to the aging process, which can lead to a decrease in the number and diameter of hair.
  3. Gender. Men typically have more hair density than women due to hormonal differences and genetic factors.
  4. The health of the scalp and hair follicles. Healthy scalp and hair follicles are important for hair growth and maintenance. Scalp problems such as seborrhea or psoriasis, as well as problems with the hair follicles, can lead to hair loss and decreased density.
  5. Nutrition. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients is important for hair health and growth. Lack of certain nutrients, such as iron, zinc, protein and B vitamins, can lead to hair loss and decreased thickness.
  6. Stress and lifestyle. High levels of stress, insufficient sleep, improper hair care, and the use of tobacco and alcohol can negatively affect hair health and lead to hair loss and loss of thickness.

And now to the myths.

Myth: Shaving increases hair growth rate and thickness.

Have you ever felt like shaving makes your hair grow coarser and thicker? However, this statement has no scientific basis. Shaving has no effect on stimulating hair growth as it does not interact with the follicles. The hair appears thicker and coarser because its edge is sharply cut with a razor, and if usually the hair is narrow at the tip and wider towards the base, then the hair cut with a razor will be wide on all sides.

Factors that influence changes in hair growth can be related to genetics, hormonal balance, metabolism, race, medications, poor diet, level of physical activity and stress levels.

Does hair color change?

Hair shade also depends on genetics, which determines the amount of pigment (melanin) in the hair. However, certain factors such as smoking, prolonged exposure to sunlight, antipathetic conditions or age can change hair color. Hair color also changes in children – a newborn may have a completely different hair color than the same child 3-4 years later. But shaving has no effect on this.

Myth: Frequent brushing increases hair loss

Human hair falls out naturally during the process of hair renewal. Combing your hair does not cause hair loss, even if there are a few hairs on the comb. It is considered normal if 100 to 300 hairs fall out per day, as these are dead hairs or hairs that have accidentally pulled out.

During its life cycle, hair goes through different growth phases, each lasting about 3-5 years. Then comes the resting phase, which lasts about three months. At the end of this phase, the old hair falls out.

Myth: Stress causes hair loss

Increased hair loss can be caused by various factors, such as hormonal imbalance, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, stress, internal diseases, medications, improper hair care and genetics. However, even frequent combing of hair cannot cause hair loss beyond normal.

Stress can also cause increased hair loss. Many people notice that during periods of stress their hair begins to fall out more often. Stress changes the body’s hormonal levels, and this can lead to changes in metabolism and blood circulation, which in turn negatively affects the hair roots and their nutrition.

If a person notices significant hair loss, it is recommended to consult a trichologist. After examining the condition of the hairline and conducting the necessary tests, the doctor will be able to determine the cause of the problem and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

The following methods may also be useful:

• Reduce stress levels in general. To do this, you can consult with a psychologist.
• Ensure normal sleep, both in quantity and quality.
• Proper nutrition. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and microelements helps the body cope with stress and strengthens hair.
